This image was painted at John Roddam’s Induction to St. James Anglican in Kentville, NS. John’s wife, Holly, suggested the theme of Jesus’ baptism to me beforehand. I wanted to show the upturned face of Jesus at the moment the water was poured over him. The gesture is one of absolute submission. Everything that would flow from Jesus from this time forward would be words and actions direct from the heart of God. The hand pouring water over the figure is akin to the source of the word of God and the figure’s posture deep in the water ready to plunge under reflects the obedience to God. All this is against the backdrop of the dove of the Holy Spirit.
