Be the Servant

Acrylic 24” x 32”

This painting was done during a worship time at the Nova Scotia Ashram in July of 2008. Jesus demonstrated what kind of people his disciples should become as they would continue his ministry once he was gone. This image freezes the moment where Jesus washes Peter’s feet. It is a moment of Peter’s protest and discomfort with the echo of the words still in the air as Jesus said that unless he let him wash his [Peter’] feet, that he would have no part of Jesus’ ministry. The water dripping upon Peter from Jesus is significant. It represents cleansing, it also represents the passing on of Jesus ministry, a kind of graduation, and it represents servanthood as being the ultimate limit of any disciple’s aspiration.
